PDS Campers Hand-Washing Clothes

In the spring of 1948, PDS seventh-grade campers had to wash their own clothes at camp.  This photograph from the Carol Johnston Collection shows students scrubbing their clothes on washboards.  Campers were expected to help out at camp in addition to having fun.  Excerpts from Elena Harap's 1951 camp diary explain that students had to help with cooking and dishes.  Elena describes the hard work of scrubbing tubs and cupboards.
